Out in Oklahoma With the wind and the wheat There are these black old bones That keep on haunting me She said she'd never leave, she'd never leave she'd never leave me alone Those black old bones Fiddle back fiddle back of my two tone heart They are my coveted arc Those black old bones... Out in Oklahoma Where the storms are tumblin' And the trains and tractors are rumblin' All over those black old bones I stand 6'4" but the dirt is eighty eighty eight Those black old bones With weed and horses and hefers and stick Sweat and stone Those black old bones

I'll take a butcher knife and cut off my head Send you an email says my body is dead You want me to love you but you, you gotta love me, too I'll put holes in my hand and a bullet into my brain So you can say your saviour's come and gone again You want me to love you but you, you gotta love me, too I'll pull up my bootstraps and pack up my case I'll light a fire, babe, and burn off my face You want me to love you but you, you gotta love me, too I'll find the strongest wind and fly off this rock I'll leave behind a text message says lock, stock, and teardrop You want me to love you but you, you gotta love me, too I'll grow wings from my back and grow out my stinger Peel the skin from my body, babe, and pull off my fingers You want me to love you but you, you gotta love me, too The moral of this tale is to do unto others Insects can fly, babe, and monkeys eat their brothers You want me to love you but you, you gotta love me, too

Down in Louisiana tracking Mississippi mud She danced like flame around a bucket of blood She got my soul, she got my brain and freedom comes down Bone Camp Road My blood's on fire pumping under my skin The Devil's yelling, "Let this day begin!" I got my boots, locked and load and freedom comes down Bone Camp Road The moon curls through her dark hair She ain't no betty she's my black mare She got her dolls (she got her dolls) She got my soul (she got his soul) and freedom comes down Bone Camp Road
6.
I looked for you in Mississippi and looked down in New Orleans But they said that you were up in Queens You long gone train of mine I looked for you in New York City and looked up in Buffalo But they said that you were down in Orlando You long gone train of mine You long gone train of mine I looked for you in scripture and I looke for you in song But they said that you had never come along You long gone train of mine I looked for you in Heaven but they said that you were in Hell So I thought that I would follow you there You long gone train of mine You long gone train of mine I looked for you inside of me but I didn't find you there Just an old train conductor and a broken chair You long gone train of mine I looked for you all over but you were not to be found So I will ride these rails around and around You long gone train of mine You long gone train of mine You long gone train of mine

When I was a boy once I ran away from home I didn't get very far, around a few corners and down a couple streets My Daddy he looked for me, he came and he found me But he wasn't mad at me though, in fact, he was crying He said, "Son, you're gonna find, in this world, that sometimes it takes a gentler hand" My mother now, well she was crying, too She seemed mad at me though, she was just crying and shaking me She kept whining inbetween her sobs, "Boy, how could you do this to me?" But I couldn't help but think to myself, "Do this to YOU?" He said, "Son, you're gonna find, in this world, that sometimes it takes a gentler hand" I found myself walking home from school one day and I saw someone sitting there, crying She was the odd girl, the weird girl, but really not any lower than me She looked up at me with something in her eyes and her panties down around her feet She looked up at me like she wasn't expecting nothing He said, "Son, you're gonna find, in this world, that sometimes it takes a gentler hand" Now I'm an old man just wishing that I could be a young man again Soup and a brownie they bring me for dinner after a sandwich they bring me at three And I look back at my life all splayed out here on these white sheets And I wasn't privileged and poor and wasn't good but I knew what it was to cry He said, "Son, you're gonna find, in this world, that sometimes it takes a gentler hand"

In my mind I see a space, in my mind I see a space Far as I can see in that space there's no room for me I'm gonna wade in the water until my blood has washed away The stars they look down on me, the stars they look down on me Since I's a child I can feel the stars pushing down on me I'm gonna wade in the water until my bones have all washed away And the childs they all gathered around, and my family they all gathered around I said farewell God's abandoned me, advert your eyes I'm gonna wade in the water until my soul has washed away God Don't You Trouble My Body No More Gonna wade in the water, gonna wade in the water child Gonna wade in the water, gonna wade in the water until my blood has all washed clean Gonna wade in the water, gonna wade in the water child Gonna wade in the water, gonna wade in the water until my soul has all washed clean And God don't you trouble my body no more

Jimmie Mack Lynn, he come in, and tells me just to sit still He's gonna pluck out my eyes so I can't cry and burn up all of my quills He's a mean mother fucker and I am such a sucker to let him expose my will He took my eyes and he took my feets Put in a box wrapped in a sheet He buried that box outside my cell so I could smell them rot He's a horrid old boy who see's to take my joy and together they ring my bells There are not birds and there are no trees because of Jimmy Mack Lynn Do you hear me Jimmie Mack Lynn Do you hear me, Jimmie Mack Lynn, do you hear me Jimmie Mack Lynn I have suspicioned that he did not sleep alone When the rains come down I can smell that box and she ain't just flesh and bone He's a ruthless mother fucker and I'm a goddamed sucker but what else is in that box? Jimmie Mack Lynn Do you hear me Jimmie Mack Lynn, do you hear me? Jimmie Mack Lynn, do you hear me? What else is in that box? What else is in that box?

This Thing 02:41
This thing, I can't feel it in my arms This thing, I can feel it down in my heart It is a pleasure, it is a joy To have come across this thing It can rain and pour, won't bother me no more Strip my possesions and drive me from my door This thing, precious thing Will prepare it's killing floor This thing is like a baby held in my arms Oh baby, like the axe out in your barn Will strike me down and burn me out Such is the nature of this thing In the morning your floorboards they start to creak Oh baby, your air it begins to freeze In your chest and in your soul You feel the coming of this thing
13.
In this place where I call home, there is a mountain of my black soul In this place where I now live, there is a river where I dip my quill In the evening, where I'm free, there is a crow waiting for me Light from a candle where I now lay, reveals the shadow in my brain Brick and mortar where I now hide, will fall like hail from the sky In the yard, where I now bay, unto word and picture I am a slave In this heart that I call mine, there is a canyon from which they mine In the building from where they learn, they study the rock and where it's from And like the time in which we did not stand up, no one will know why it was abrupt And in this soul that I feel, there is a crow I know is real

about

"The list of world-class artists that have emerged from Muscle Shoals, Alabama is long-- a veritable “who’s who” of music makers that spans decades... even generations. Indeed, nearly every genre and style has a representative, but you’d be hard pressed to find an artist-- a voice-- as unique and compelling as Eric “Red Mouth” Gebhardt.

Simply put, there’s really nobody quite like him in American music... and that is not hyperbole. Sure, there are reference points. Captain Beefheart, Iggy Pop, R.L. Burnside and Leonard Cohen are all echoed throughout his songs... but really, references are cheap. Red Mouth is Red Mouth and it’s truly difficult to nail him down.

On “Toska”, his latest record, he enlisted some of the area’s finest musicians to help escort you through what he calls “dark tales of love and the bizarre”. Jimbo Hart and Chad Gamble (Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit) provide the rock-solid rhythm section, while Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes) anchors the keyboards and organ. Harvey Thompson (Lyle Lovett, countless others) blows the saxophone and Donnie Fritts (Kris Kristofferson, solo) contributes not only electric piano, but a song as well.

“From my booth, it felt like there was a lot of love being poured in from all who worked on it,” Gebhardt says. “Kinda like what I imagine the sessions for Screamin’ Lord Sutch and his Heavy Friends might have been like.”

Despite the big names, the real attraction here is Red Mouth. He sings, stomps, romps, bellows and howls his way through thirteen songs that truly communicate the essence of his craft-- true, unabashed artistry without a hint of compromise or pretense.

“I feel like this record bridges the language barrier between the spirit world, myself and all the Earth like nothing I’ve ever done before,” Gebhardt added.

“It’s not pop music. It’s messages from the other side.”

That attitude is the essence of Red Mouth’s music-- a sound that has taken him all over the world. It’s even put him in film festivals-- he has a role in “Mourning Hills”, a motion picture from Highland Piper Entertainment that’s due to screen this year.

But for this multi-talented artist, whether it’s the screen or the long-player-- he can’t help but make that sound. “Toska” is the penultimate distillation of that sound... and the perfect opportunity for you to get acquainted with an artist unlike any you’ve ever met before." - Reed Watson (Belle Adair, The Pollies)

Red Mouth Muscle Shoals, Alabama

A strange brew of Son House, Captian Beefheart, Elvis and Nick Cave, backboned by stomping, driving Muscle Shoals rhythms. All resulting in a gospel experience through a gothic Alabama that your typical singer songwriters won't be guiding you anytime soon. ... more
